The Future of Learning; A Networked Society

There are many new ideas involving education and integration of technology. However, because education has been virtually the same since it was first introduced, it is difficult to implement a new system without creating more problems than are being solved. There are people though that are trying new educational approaches as discussed in the video “The Future of Learning; A Networked Society”. We as educators already know that all students learn differently and a variety of educational strategies must be used in order to reach all of these students. In the video, they talked about a type of academic profiling software that mapped out students’ strengths and weaknesses. It also was able to tell students what type of learning worked best for them. I believe this is an amazing tool to have in the educational system. Although teachers try their best to learn each student’s “learning profile”, only so much can be done by one person – especially when that person is teaching twenty or more students at one time. With electronic academic profiling, students can have their learning styles mapped out starting from kindergarten, and it would only become more accurate as time went on. Also, the idea that other similar people can benefit from a profile opens up a world of endless possibilities. If educational institutions all over the world began using this type of software, I believe a revolution is very likely and almost guaranteed. Although I do believe that the possibilities are endless, I still believe that classrooms are important and the traditional school environment does have its benefits. Ideally, if we can incorporate the virtual programs into a real life school, children would have the greatest opportunity ever for learning. If we took away the traditional groupings of school and let students fall into groups that are better suited for each one’s individual needs, they would be more involved and interested in their own education. I agree with what was said in the video in that the educational system needs to be completely destroyed for a more superior one to fall into place. As easy as it is to speculate about what will make the educational system better, we will constantly be running into the issue of money. Unless we can fund an entire educational makeover, we will always be following the same general path in education. Society as a whole needs to realize that if we revolutionize education we are in turn revolutionizing the world.
